Our Marine LIfe

marine life affected by plastic These photos are what the plastics in our oceans are doing to our marine life.  The next time you eat fish, determine if it is possible that fish belly was filled with tiny pieces of plastic.  Plastic in the ocean breaks down into very small pieces, but it takes many, many years for that process to happen.  Because of the chemicals used to create the plastic containers,  toxins are leached into the water when the plastic finally breaks down.  Fish think this is food. Not only that, some of that plastic, like bags can smother the marine life.  Over 600 types of marine line are vulnerable to harm form the original form or the toxins when they break down.    As you can see not only plastics harm our marine life, look at the whale caught up in netting from fishing boats.  When do we start to reverse this tragedy?

Are you more sick today than you were 20 years ago? What has changed?

One of the biggest health hazard we face today is the catastrophic amount of plastics in our oceans.  Not only does it cause changes in the composition of our ocean water, it causes loss of marine life, and the very real possibility that the fish we eat have been infected with plastic toxins from the ocean.

This is our plastic sent to China prior to the Green Fence initiative they imposed on us. I imagine theour plastics sent to China Pre Green Fencey realized getting the plastic was too big of a price to pay for the minimal “metal” they reaped out of it all.  The price was pollution of the greatest to human health.

Now weour waste in developing countries send our trash to young developing countries where it is sifted through to find the metal which is sold.  The rest is left to leach into the soil or blow into the oceans and in all cases it is a risk to land animals, marine life, and humans.

Do we actually think out of sight out of mind?  We are now reaping the consequences of this 1950 invention that we thought was the greatest.

I believe that many illnesses, physical and mental, are the result of the toxins we breathe and the foods we eat.  I believe we need to do whatever we can to affect change in this arena.

Plastics, Plastics, Plastics!

They are the ghosts of our consumptions. We consumed 280 million tons of plastic in 2014 worldwide. This is a 75% increase in consumptions over 2010, yet there was only a 3.5% shocked face on drowning in plasticspopulation increase during that period. Our consumption per capita has increased. So much is made of plastic these days. TV surrounds, car interiors, vacuums, and more. But it is the little things we use daily that get sent to the landfills and much ends up in our oceans. Along with the 110 millions tons of plastic waste in our oceans and additional 20 million tons ends up there each year

Plastics

Little did our parents know what the result of this revolutionary invention of PLASTIC would do to our ecosystems. What systems are impacted by this revolution:
Our water (hydrologic) cycle
Our marine life
Our soils
Our health
Just to name a few.  Please feel free to add whatever I have left out.  I am not an expert in science, but I am a passionate advocate of finding ways to make a difference in our consumption of plastic and reducing health risks for us all.
